WELCOME TO THE KENYA TRANSPORTERS ASSOCIATION DRIVER REGISTRATION PORTAL
DRIVERS: THE BACKBONE OF ROAD TRANSPORT
Drivers and driver apprentices (turn men) are the cornerstone of any successful road transport operation. They are entrusted with valuable assets – cargo worth millions of shillings and the vehicles themselves. Their role in ensuring the safety of these assets and other road users is paramount. This importance cannot be emphasized enough.
THE NEED FOR COMPETENT DRIVERS & TURN MEN
The industry requires a workforce of healthy, competent, professional, and ethical drivers and driver apprentices (turn men). These individuals should be well-trained, motivated, and adequately compensated.
A LOOMING DRIVER SHORTAGE
The Kenya Transporters Association (KTA) anticipates a significant driver shortage in the near future. This concern stems from the decline in hiring turn men (driver apprentices) by most road transport companies over the past decade. In the instances where there are turn men, many end up driving vehicles without the necessary licenses or the consent of the truck owners, a practice that has been identified as a major contributor to road accidents. Historically, over 99% of current drivers began their careers as turn men before transitioning to full drivers. This traditional pipeline for developing new drivers is shrinking as existing drivers retire and companies cease employing turn men. This trend leaves the industry with a driver pool that is often inadequately trained, poorly socialized, and aging.
THE KTA DRIVER REGISTRATION
The Kenya Transporters Association (KTA) is committed to addressing critical issues within the transportation sector. This concept note outlines a comprehensive plan for establishing a driver/driver apprentice (turn man) registration platform. This initiative will focus on registering qualified drivers and driver apprentices (turn men) to be available to KTA members who must also be fully compliant with the labour laws in Kenya including paying the legal wages as per the regulations.
TRANSPARENT REGISTRATION PROCESS
The registration process will involve a series of steps, including:
1. Receiving applications from qualified drivers and driver apprentices.
2. Thorough review of all applications.
3. Conducting comprehensive background checks.
4. Assessing driver and driver apprentices (turn men) skills
5. Verifying medical reports to ensure driver fitness.
The Concept Objective
The Kenya Transporters Association is dedicated to solving the challenge of sourcing competent and ethical drivers and driver apprentices (turn men). The establishment of the driver registration platform is a strategic initiative that will revolutionize the driver sourcing process. This will ensure that transporters have access to a reliable and professional workforce. We seek the support and collaboration of all stakeholders to achieve this vision and significantly enhance the safety, efficiency, and integrity of the Kenyan transport industry
